Okay, well, there were a few reasons why I was hesitant to get this book. Number One Reason was that a friend of mine got the book and did not like it very much. Since I trust her judgment I was hesitant. (But I really wanted to try it, and I wanted to come to my own opinion– even if in the end we would agree… 🙂 ) Two: The book is told in two points of view– and one of them was poetry… But I got the book anyway and was determined to give it a fair review! Unfortunately, I still didn’t like it…
One of the things I didn’t like about the book was, the characters did not seem real to me. Not exactly like cardboard cutouts, but maybe just really far away. Maybe I just did not relate to them enough, but I think that is one of the major things that I didn’t like about this book. It’s probably because I didn’t like the characters, that I got them mixed up a lot too. (Which, I know, how can I get a character who has a mostly normal voice and one who’s chapters are told in poetry? Somehow I did, though…)
I really didn’t like how much was staked on one of the characters weight gain. They would talk about when she was thinner, but they would reference it as Before…. Physical appearance should not be so important that we label ourselves as Before I got my hair cut, or After I got my hair cut– it is just a physical appearance (and while to much weight gain can be unhealthy, we should not define people by it.)
The story is about two sisters– twins– who were closer when they were younger, but grew apart as they got older. As the book go along, in only the course of a week they go from being very distant and not understanding each other at all, to being close enough to confide their deepest secrets? I felt like that may have been a bit fast…
I did like, though, that this was a very quick read. I think I read it just two sittings or so. A very quick read.
